Welcome to Shana’s Digest!! :-) My name is Shana Gelin and I am a Freshmen at Rider University and I am majoring in Biology. I am determined, trustworthy, and a very cooperative person in and outside of the classroom which coincides to the reason why I have achieved well academically and in leadership. When I attended Willingboro High School I was secretary and treasurer of an organization called Afri- Female Institute and maintained being on the honor roll for all four years in high school.
My philosophy is to live life as if you have nothing left so give your all in everything that you accomplish. Tomorrow is never promised so take life remembering that you have one life to live. I am a hard worker and independent person for my own determination to do well in the future and to help others who did not have the same opportunities as I did. Helping other is what I believe makes the world go round and will also be a passion of mine in anything that I do in the future.
I hope you enjoy reading Shana’s Digest and learning about my accomplishments, future aspirations, and the way of helping others through my own success.

Letter of Intent
Dear Internship Coordinator,
This letter is to show my interest in your medical hospital. I will be graduating from Rider University in 2013 and I believe with my previous experiences and future goals, I will be an asset to your medical hospital.
I will be graduating with a degree in Biology and I have volunteered at many local hospitals in my area such as Virtua Memorial Hospital, and learned communication techniques that I can bring into the medical field and respond well with the patients. Communication techniques such as, listening to others, being empathic, and communicating with children are skills that would be necessary in a hospital environment. With these experiences I am able to maintain my composure to all attitudes that are faces at a hospital atmosphere, with patients, employers and even visitors. Working in a pediatrics unit will be an experience that I would love to endure at your medical facility because taking care of others is a passion of mine that I will always love.
I am interest in your internship at your medical hospital and with my experiences and passion for learning I believe that I am a great candidate for this internship. My resume is attached here with experiences, skills and activities that I have as of now. I believe that from my experiences that I can be a great benefit to your medical hospital.
Thank you and I hope to be hearing from you soon. My contacts are on the resume so feel free to contact me anytime about this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Shana Gelin

Biography
I was born in Willingboro, New Jersey where my mother, father and three brothers moved to accommodate a new child coming into the family. Both of my parents were born in Haiti and also taught my brothers and I to strive for excellence in everything that we do. My parents raised me so I can be independent which resulted in me being the well rounded person that I am now. I attended Willingboro High School and was apart of many clubs in activities such as, National Honor Society, National Society of Black Engineers, Class of 2009 Representatives, Bible Club and so much more. I was able to balance my time wisely with all these clubs and maintained being on the Honor Roll every marking period.
Now in college I am a freshman and currently a member of the Educational Opportunity Program at Rider University. I will be attaining a degree in Biology, and hoping to obtain an internship at a medical hospital.

Academic Experiences
During high School I was a part of the Advanced Placement Psychology class where we did critiques on psychological disorders. I did a presentation and critique on Dissociative Identity Disorder which is also known as Multiple Personality Disorder.
Abstract Presentation
Dissociative Identity Disorder Critique
In college in my Speech Communications class I had to perform an entertainment speech. My speech was on How Brothers are Hard to Handle. Please enjoy this video of me performing my speech.
My group and I in a class called Race, Class, and Gender in America performed a Model for Action Project that was about our program that we created called “Stop the Violence Program.” This program is a way to get teenagers off the streets in Trenton so they would have a safe haven after school. Buses will be provided from Trenton Central High School to Rider University where the program is going to be held. Here is a slide show explaining the details about the “Stop the Violence Program.”

Volunteered Experience
Marcella Masonic Home: This nursing home is located in Burlington, New Jersey where I prepared daily meals for the elder to eat. Also I participated in providing activities for the elderly to do during their free time.
Virtua Memorial Hospital : Virtua Memorial Hospital is located in Mount Laurel, New Jersey and I kept the patients in the Intensive care unit busy by talking to them if they did not have any visitors that came to see them.
Willingboro High School: At Willingboro High School I painted the school with inspirational quotes that represented the theme for eat hallway. For example, the cafeteria hallway would have food for the soul as the quote for the hallway.
Haitian Baptist Church: This is my home church in Burlington, New Jersey. I volunteer at my church by cleaning the church on certain weekends.

Personal
At Rider University there was an event called Unity Days where the theme was social justice. The university got a man named Emmanuel Jal to come in and talk about his life as a war child in Africa. Emmanuel Jal went through a horrible life of pain, guilt, and agony. To survive he almost ate his own friend. His life is so amazing and he uses his life to explain his music. Listen the this song he wrote for a lady named Emma who took care of him when no one wanted him and read my abstract about Emmanuel Jal’s life.
